A private Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai journey: who it suits and what happens after you enquire

This page outlines a common private route linking Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai over about twelve days. It is an education scenario for planning conversations, not a fixed package for sale. China Private Journeys is an online enquiry and routing platform. We collect your preferences, help clarify options, and introduce you to independent local planners or suppliers. We do not hold trip deposits or trip balances, issue package invoices as a travel agency, or book hotels, guides, tickets, or transport ourselves unless separately agreed in writing. Any contract and payment sit between you and the provider you choose. Submitting an enquiry is free and creates no booking. You can withdraw at any time by emailing contact@chinaprivatejourneys.com. A related featured route page also lives at /journeys/beijing-xian-shanghai-12-days; treat both as conversation starters rather than a checkout SKU.

Who it's for

This route suits travellers who want China's three most recognisable urban centres in one trip without joining a group tour. It works well for first-time visitors who prefer a private driver and guide in each city, for families who need flexible pacing, and for couples or solo travellers who want the logistics handled while they decide daily details on the ground. It also fits repeat visitors who want to add a specific interest such as food, architecture, or photography without redesigning the whole skeleton.

The shape below assumes international flights into Beijing and out of Shanghai, or the reverse. Domestic connections use high-speed rail between Beijing and Xi'an (about 4.5 to 5.5 hours) and between Xi'an and Shanghai (about 6 to 7 hours). Flights are an option on either leg if you prefer to save daytime hours.

Illustrative private journey shape - 12 days Beijing to Xi'an to Shanghai

Days 1 to 4: Beijing. Arrive in Beijing and transfer privately to your hotel. Typical first days cover the Forbidden City and nearby viewpoints, a Temple of Heaven or hutong afternoon, and a Great Wall visit (Mutianyu or Jinshanling are common quieter picks). A later Beijing day can stay free, visit the Summer Palace, or leave room before the high-speed train to Xi'an.

Days 5 to 8: Xi'an. Arrive by high-speed rail and settle in. A common shape pairs the City Wall and Muslim Quarter food streets with a guided Terracotta Army morning. Remaining Xi'an time can cover a museum, the Great Mosque, Mount Hua, or a cooking class, then a morning buffer before the train to Shanghai.

Days 9 to 12: Shanghai. Arrive at Hongqiao and transfer to your hotel. Illustrative days include the Bund and Yu Garden, a museum or concession walk, and one buffer day for a water town, galleries, or rest. Departure day is usually a private transfer to Pudong or Hongqiao.

What is flexible vs example-only

Every element above can change. The number of nights in each city, the choice of wall section, the inclusion of Mount Hua, the museums visited, the dining style, and the hotel tier are all decision points you discuss with the planner you are introduced to. The high-speed rail legs can swap to flights. The order can reverse (Shanghai to Xi'an to Beijing). You can insert a stop in Luoyang for the Longmen Grottoes between Xi'an and Shanghai, or add Chengdu for pandas before or after the core three cities. The scenario exists to give your first conversation a concrete starting shape, not to lock you into a preset itinerary.

What happens after the form

  • You submit the enquiry form on this site with dates, traveller count, interests, budget range, and any must-haves or must-avoids. Submitting is free and creates no booking.
  • We review the details and may email or WeChat you a few clarifying questions - preferred pace, hotel style, dietary needs, mobility considerations.
  • With your permission, we forward the brief to one or two independent local planners or suppliers who match the profile. They are separate businesses; we do not employ them.
  • Each planner replies directly to you with a draft itinerary and a written quote. You compare, ask revisions, and decide whether to proceed.
  • If you book, the contract, deposit, balance payments, and on-ground fulfilment are between you and that provider. China Private Journeys is not a party to that contract and does not hold any trip funds.
  • You can withdraw your enquiry at any time by emailing contact@chinaprivatejourneys.com. We stop follow-up immediately.

Honest boundaries

China Private Journeys is not a licensed travel agency. We do not sell fixed package tours. We do not issue package invoices as a travel agency. We do not guarantee third-party supplier performance. We do not issue visas; we can only pass on invitation-letter guidance when a connected provider offers it. Prices, inclusions, cancellation terms, and force-majeure policies come from the independent provider you select. Travel insurance remains your responsibility when you book a trip with a third party. For more on how the platform works, see how a private China trip enquiry works.

Ready to start a conversation?

If the shape above looks like a useful starting point, send your dates and preferences through the enquiry form. We will clarify the brief and connect you with planners who can turn it into a quoted itinerary. For the platform rules in more detail, read how a private China trip enquiry works.

FAQ

How many days do I really need for Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai?

Twelve days gives a comfortable pace with two full days in Beijing, three in Xi'an, and three in Shanghai plus travel days. Ten days is possible if you fly the domestic legs and accept longer daily schedules. Fourteen days allows side trips such as Mount Hua, Luoyang, or a water town near Shanghai.

Can I reverse the order or start in Shanghai?

Yes. The route works in either direction. International flight availability often decides which city makes sense as the entry and exit point. Note your preferred gateway in the enquiry so quotes match the rail or flight plan.

Are the high-speed trains reliable for luggage?

Yes. Trains between Beijing and Xi'an and between Xi'an and Shanghai run frequently. Business class and first class have overhead racks and space at the end of each carriage. A private driver meets you at each station and handles bags to the hotel.

Do I need a visa before I enquire?

No. You can enquire while you sort the visa. Most nationalities need a tourist visa (L) or qualify for a visa-free transit policy. The planner you eventually book with can provide an invitation letter if your consulate requires one.

What if I want to add Chengdu or Guilin to this route?

That is a common extension. The planner can insert Chengdu between Xi'an and Shanghai (high-speed rail about 3.5 hours from Xi'an, about 8 hours to Shanghai) or add a flight leg to Guilin from any of the three cities. The enquiry form has a free-text field for exactly this kind of request.

Is there a fee to use the enquiry platform?

No. Submitting an enquiry is free and creates no booking. You only pay an independent provider if you accept their written quote and sign their contract. China Private Journeys does not collect that deposit on this site.

The featured journey page at /journeys/beijing-xian-shanghai-12-days is a companion conversation starter, not a checkout SKU. Treat both pages as planning aids before any contract with an independent provider.
